From: "Calvin E.
Phillips" Subject: Carroll Family Conversation James, we started writing a note to you several days ago and are sending it as an attachment to this. If it doesn't make it or if it causes you any trouble, please let us know. James: Thought we would get a little note off to you as we are getting ready to fly back to Ft Smith next week and will be out of touch for a few weeks. This has been a really hectic year for us, not only the deaths in Helen's family, but our oldest son and his wife and daughter decided to move to Salt Lake City. Then, my (Cal's) mother decided to move to Scottsdale, AZ, all of which has really kept us hopping. We will be starting our annual trek to South Texas (close to Corpus Christi) Wednesday, where we will stay (off and on) until some time in April. We will be "on the road" until somewhere around the end of October. Our address there is *address and phone number deleted*. Helen's dad told us a story that we wanted to pass along to you. It is about Joseph Martin CARROLL's father. According to the story, Joseph Martin's grandfather remarried when Joseph Martin's father was about 14 years of age. He apparently did not get along with his new step-mother, so along with a younger brother, he ran away to sea. His ship was captured by the British who held him for three years before he got back to the U.S. The younger brother died during that time. While walking home, he met someone he knew who told him that his father had died in his absence. Since he did not want to see his stepmother, he turned around and went back to sea for another 11 years. If Nathan Sr. was Joseph Martin's father and this old story is accurate, then he must have been the sailor. Joe believed that they lived somewhere in the Carolinas. Have you ever heard this story or anything like it? Before we had a chance to send this off, we received your note re: cousins. Yes, that seems correct you and Helen are third cousins. What a web. I am going to try to get this all into my database as soon as I can find a few hours. I have been using Brothers Keeper 2.0 for awhile although I do have Family Tree Makers but have never used the program. As I remember, I bought it in order to get the CD that had the 170,000,000 names. When I get it all together, I will ship you a gedcom on disk of everything we have. We are really tickled to get the information about Nathan Jr. and Sr. as we had no idea that the Nathan CARROLL we had always heard of was Nathan Jr.. We went to see Mrs. Harold E. (Kathryn) Finley two years ago, while they still lived in Carrollton and she said she would send us some family information that her daughter was preparing, but they moved before she got around to it. By the way, she has the old Carroll family bible. Kathryn is the granddaughter of Mrs. Catherine Greene, nee Malinda Catherine CARROLL. Malinda Catherine was born January 9, 1867 near Henryville, IN, daughter of Joseph Martin CARROLL and Martha Jane BIGGS. Which of course, is why she has the bible. When we were back at Bosworth/Carrollton last fall, we went to see her, but they had moved to be closer to their daughter, around Jefferson City we think. We would appreciate a copy of anything you have from her. James, making contact with you has been like a breath of fresh air. We are apparently about the only ones in the Joseph Martin branch of the family who are trying to do any family research and being so far away has made it difficult. Plus the fact, that we only seriously started a few years ago. It is really great to find you and that you also have an interest in genealogy. Outside of conversations with Helen's dad, the only family information we were ever able to find was some that the sons of a cousin of Helen's prepared. We are sending, by slow mail, copies of some obituaries and funeral notices that we have. As soon as we have time and the opportunity to get organized we will make everything we have available to you. Deannie and Aunt Mary Esther have mentioned sending information to someone in OK for a couple of years, so we don't know just exactly what you do have already. We are sending this as an attachment.
If it doesn't get there we will resend or mail a copy. We are in a mad
scramble to get things together for our 3:15am run to the airport Wed
morning. We will retrieve our e-mail messages on/or about October
28th. Helen and Cal P.S. What do you know about David Carroll of SC?
