Home Carroll Lingle Rorabaugh Ballew Contacts What's New

Letters from Larry Hartsog, son of Glen Irvin Hartsog whose mother was Laura Etta Rorabaugh, daughter of John William Rorabaugh, my grandmother's brother.

24 April 1995
Dear Jim,

Good to hear from you! And yes, I would be glad to receive any information on family relations, and to correct errors.  The other day, when I looked up Henry H. Carroll, it seems to have an estimated date in brackets, for his birth, this has happened to me before, when I sent information to Salt Lake on paper, instead of on a disk, when it was copied over, is where I believe the error was made.  I got all the information on the Rorabaugh/Carroll lines, from two Rohrbach family genealogy books.  Your Grandmother, and my grandmother, both helped James D. Rorabaugh, when he wrote his in 1966.  I remember that is when my grandmother Laura Ette, got me started on this.  She would tell me stories, and I made some copies for her, and she would let me copy pictures of ancestors, etc.  There was also a family reunion of Rorabaugh relations in Waterford, CA, sometime about 1960, and I remember the names of Carroll and Fobroy.

Back to the two Rohrbach Genealogy Books, although our grandmothers were probably most accurate with their information, when James D. Rorabaugh, or "JDR", put this in his book in 1966, which I call the Gray Book, there were errors, as you will see on these copies I'll send.  The biggest error, was when he copied an earlier book on the family, as many did, and got the Immigrant ancestor mistaken, with a son or brother.  Twenty Two books followed until about 1982, when Lewis Bunker Rohrbach, had hired a researcher over in Germany, to go back to 1565.  Lewis or "LBR" also indexed his Rd Book 1982, Which was great!

We just recently got our computer, and I am still adding names from my binders, which is a big job! Not only that, our 10 year old has to help me sometimes on the different computer functions, etc., I guess it's because we didn't grow with them as he is.   You mention that two of Eliza's children are still living, I would be happy to hear about your father and Sylvia, and as I said, anything about the family!  Once I add all of the information from my paper files, I want to add more to the Ancestor File, and of course, made the needed corrections.  The LDS updates the faile about every four years, the last was about 1992.  I could tell by Henry H. Carroll's AFN, which had a prefix of R75, which my second entry, my first was in 1988, and they were GKL.  Mostly, because of the privacy act, only the deceased will be printed in the Ancestor file, not like us who are interested in everyone.

The man on the left, applying the salve on the flier for the Rorabaw Salve, must be John Mitchell Rorabaw, as he looks a lot like his father Nathan!

Best Wishes,
Larry Hartsog

[Note: Larry had submitted a file of genealogy to the LDS church.  I got his name as the source of the information and wrote to him.  This was his response.  I have had other correspondence from Larry, but will have to include this correspondence later.]
