James W.Moser
Dear Mr. Carroll:
I noticed your site on
rootsweb regarding James W.Moser. I believe that he is my
gg grandfather. I have searching for many years for my
father's ancestors and have only recently
found some of them... My g
grandfather is Daniel Powers Moser who according to an
article that was written in Texas in the late 1890's about
his role in the Confederacy , he stated that he was from
Burleson County, Texas, and that he was b. in 1839 in
Hayward County, Tennessee, and that his parents were from
Tennessee. I have found references to property of James
W.Moser and his wife, Mary sold to a Daniel P. Moser and
to a Mr. Milhollin who married Daniel's sister Roena Moser
in Texas. I had approached another Moser descendent about
the name Daniel Powers Moser,
but the birthdates didn't match to my Daniel. although it
is the same family as yours, being that James may be
a son of Daniel Powers Moser, and grandson of Adam
and a Peter Moser. I recently located him in the 1900
census in Texas, Runnels County, and the dates look good..
I am wondering if you have any more information about this
person. He stated in the article that was written, that he
was only about a year old when his mother and father left
Tennessee and came to Texas.
There also seems to be a
strong link to Mississippi, although I haven't found it...
I would appreciate any help
that you may have regarding this family....Thanking you in
advance for your consideration in this matter.

Hello, Marcia -
Very good to hear from you.
I'm rather "done in" tonight from a long day's
work, but I did want to write you and let you know that
there is a VERY good possibility that this James W. Moser
is the gg grandfather you've been looking for. His
wife was Mary "Polly" McKendree (a well-known
name here in Tennessee if you are a Methodist. Her
uncle was Bishop William McKendree, a great spiritual
leader of the Southern Episcopal Methodist Church here in
this area, in the early 1800's. I have a lot of
information on his ministry.
I have listed that James W.
Moser and Mary "Polly" McKendree had four
children. A Daniel, though I don't have the
birthdate, could well have been born in 1839 in Haywood
County. My wife is the fourth great
granddaughter of Mary McKendree, but through her
first husband, Richard Taylor Moore.
I have LITTLE on your
Moser surname, but you can feel quite honored to be descendent
of the McKendrees. As I said earlier, I have a
good bit of related information on this family.
There is definitely also a possibility of a
Mississippi connection. Lucinda Pearl Moore,
Daniel's half-sister, was married to Rev. William Bates.
They had one daughter (through whom my wife is descended),
however, Lucinda died within 2 years of their
marriage. Rev. Bates then married Elizabeth Adelaide
Moser, Daniel's sister. Anyway, the family
moved to Panola County, Mississippi. The Bates
family is also a very interesting one. There's
also some connection to Georgetown, Texas which I'll have
to study again to find it's significance.
Most of what knowledge I
have has come through a book called A Crane's Foot by E.
Stuart Gregg, Jr. Also, my late mother-in-law tried
to tell us about these folks. It was quite common
for a widower to marry his deceased wife's sister... I
have that in my own genealogy, but it gets confusing
sometimes.
If you are interested in
hearing more, and I take it you have a keen interest in
genealogy, I'll try to put together some things I can
e-mail you. Just let me know.
As for me, I happen to live
now north of Nashville, Tennessee, just a few
miles from Portland, Tennessee (the old Fountain Head
township is no more) where the McKendree's first
settled when they came to Tennessee where Mary
"Polly" McKendree's grandfather, John McKendree,
born 1727 in Virginia, died in 1815 at the age of 88
years. I've always enjoyed reading about this
family.
Well, I've written MUCH more
than I planned, but I just got interested. Thanks
for your lovely letter.

Re: James W. Moser
Dear Mr. Carroll:
Thank you for responding to
my query.....I am very interested in your information and
I am very sure that James Ward Moser is my gg
grandfather....another Moser descendent wrote to me, but
didn't have anything about Mary or the children.....I was
told by my father that there was a strong Methodist
history in our family so Mary's history now makes
sense.....I would appreciate any thing you would share
with me, and if you must mail anything I would reimburse
you for any postage. I have no pictures so if you have any
I would appreciate having a copy of them or through the
e-mail......My family link to James is the following......
My great grandfather is
Daniel Powers Moser, his son Wallace Knox Moser Sr. b. in
Tennessee about 1870 is my grandfather, and his son ,my
father, is Wallace Knox Moser ,Jr. who was b. in Belton,
Texas in 1902. My brother is named also Wallace Knox
Moser, III. My father died very young at the age of 42
when I was about 10 years old, and so back then I didn't
know to ask alot about family so am now really
scrambling.......
I have always had a strong
need since a very little girl to know who I am, so thus
the need to do the genealogy of my ancestors. I am
always in surprise to learn about them, and I have been
overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who are
related that have been so kind to share stories, and
information about "family".....I have met many
wonderful people such as your self who are open and
sharing... I do so much appreciate your help.
I live in California , near
San Francisco, and have retired due to illness four years
ago, and haven't been able to travel to do what I need to
do with research, It has been very frustrating for me....
If you will include info.
about the Bishop McKendree, I would like that. When my
father was living, we went to the Methodist church, but
after he died, my mother moved to California and
we went to the church of her
upbringing. the First Christian Church......It pleases me
to know about the religious history in this family....I
have other family members on my mother's grandfather's who
were Primitive Baptist ministers in Missouri and Texas.
Religion has been a very important part of my brother's and
my life.......
Tennessee is also important
to me also...My father's mother's ancestors also come from
there. Her grandfather was Ambrose McKee, Jr. from
Rutherford County, Tennessee, he settled there in 1802
with his wife, Sallie Bain Ambrose. and all his children.
His son Andrew N. McKee was responsible for
the settlement of the land around Joplin, Missouri in
the early 1830's and had the first trading post and was
the first Indian agent there to five major Indian tribes
and opened up trade there.....isn't history exciting when
you can place your family in the middle of it?
Well again, thanks again.

Marcia, attached are four Word
documents that contain information about the McKendree
family. I sure hope you use Word. The
source information is in the footnotes.
I figure that you and my wife
are third cousins, twice removed.... if that means anything
to you (ha).
Thanks so much for writing..
and please keep in touch.
I'll be sending on a separate
e-mail a photo of Bishop William McKendree.
Sincerely,
James H. Carroll

McKendree Information
Dear Mr. Carroll:
I have just read all the
information about Bishop McKendree and I am totally
overwhelmed.
I had no knowledge of any of
this history and I am so grateful to know about it......It
tells me so much and perhaps insight into my
family......You will never know what this has meant to me,
finding you and receiving such gifts. It seems that I
have much to be grateful for, and blessed that my ancestor
was such a good person and so well respected that he was
given such a honorable place in not only religious
history but history itself.........I will share this
with my brother who will be very happy with the
information.
I will stay in touch with
you and as soon as I get all the descendents information
together I will forward it on to you for your files. so
that it add to some completion for Daniel Moser.
Thank you again for your
generosity and time.
