Jim:  Here's another item on the Carroll family.  In browsing the 1880 Census, I learned that John Wiley Carroll was listed as "maimed, crippled, bedridden, or disabled."  Since my files show he lived until 1947, his condition apparently did not shorten his life!  Also found that his brother, George B. Carroll & his father Nathan C. Carroll, Jr. were unable to write (in 1880.) My ancestor Moses Carroll also was unable to write in 1880.  I'm sure school/learning always took a back seat to farming in those days, and since Nathan C. Carroll, Sr. & wife Mary were unable to read or write in 1860, this skill was probably not pursued at home, either.

Jim:  One more tidbit - In 1880, Nathan C. Carroll, Jr. lists his father's birthplace as "Atlantic Ocean."  Apparently he was born on shipboard en route to America!

Subject: Moses Carroll

Jim,
In case you don't have this information, I discovered through the Census that Moses Carroll did not live in Clark county, Indiana, his entire adult life.  I knew he was born in Kentucky, but I thought he came to Indiana fairly early.  Not so.

I have found him in Jefferson County, KY, (right across the river from Clark County, IN) both in 1850 at age 34 and in 1860 at age 45.  The family is enumerated as we would expect, with his wife  being listed as Amy in 1850 & Tama in 1860.  My grandmother Ellen is listed for the first time in 1860 at age 7.

What this means is that although Nathan Sr. & J.M. Carroll were already settled in Indiana in 1860, Moses became a Hoosier sometime between 1860-1870.  And, most interesting (to me), I discovered that Ellen's first name was Malinda.  I finally realized that the Malinda E. Carroll in the 1870 Census had to be Ellen, since both were born in 1854.  As the kids say, "Duh!"

Jim: It has been a while since I wrote, but I recently found online the
location of my grandmother (Ellen Carroll)'s grave.  She is  buried in
Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Clark County.  Her date of death is listed as Nov.
11, 1891.  A photo is attached.  (FYI - she was b. 1854,  married David
Jones of Clark County, & she is the daughter of Moses Carroll.) As far as I
can tell, my grandfather David never remarried.

Sharon,
I would appreciate the information you have from the 1870 census.  I don't have that one.  If "Ham" or Henry H. Carroll is among the children of Nathan, Jr. and Susan C., then my grandfather (Henry Hamilton Carroll) should be only about 2 years old.  However, my information has him born in Evansville, IN (across the state from Henryville). I've always been puzzled about that; I've never found any documentation to support that.  Maybe the family moved to Evansville when he was still small and he just didn't realize that he had lived and possibly had been born in Henryville.  Thanks.

Jim:
Thanks for making that change; people are indeed living longer than in the decades before.  I found Nathan Carroll, aged 93, and wife Mary, aged 70, in the 1870 Census.  They were living next door or across the road from Moses Carroll and Tamar (listed as "Amma" ) with 3 of the children.  Also neighbors were Joseph Carroll and Martha J., in a household with 5 children.  Nathan, jr., aged 39 lives with wife Susan C. in the same community of Henryville, IN, with 3 of their children.

In 1880, Moses' wife is listed as "Amy," & they still have 2 children at home.  They live next to Ellen  Carroll & husband David Jones, who have 3 children;  the other neighbor is Mary Carroll & her husband James Clapp, who then have 1 child.  If you need the children's names or other Census information, I will be glad to share.

My grandmother was Ellen Carroll, who married David Jones.  She
lived in Clark County, Indiana, and died about 1889.   She may have died
giving birth to my father Edward, or shortly after, but I believe she
died in her thirties.  I have a large photograph of her that my father
had framed when he was a young man.  I have a baby picture which may
also be Ellen, but it has not been confirmed.  My father was a WW I
veteran & died when I was only two, so I do not have much information
about his family.  I have one small photo of my grandfather David & a
woman who might have been Ellen.  Just this fall, I heard my
grandmother's name for the first time, & I was overjoyed to learn
something about my family.  Do you have any more information on Ellen or
David?  I believe David is buried in Clark County, and I assume Ellen is
 also there.

Sharon, if I've figured right, your grandmother and my grandfather were
first cousins.... their fathers being brothers: Nathan (Jr) and Moses.
Nathan Sr. is our common ancestor making us third cousins.

I'm sorry that I don't have more information about your family.  Most of
what I have came from other family members...those descendents of your
great-grandfather's brother, Joseph Martin Carroll.   It appears that Moses,
then, didn't migrate with his brothers to Missouri, etc.  My grandfather,
Henry Hamilton Carroll, son of Nathan (Jr), later migrated from Missouri  to
Oklahoma Indian Territory.  It was on his original farm near Drumright,
Oklahoma that I spent most of my boyhood days.

I have visited Clark County, Indiana, however.  I've been in the area on
business several times and have taken the time to visit the courthouse at
Jefferson City.  There I obtained the marriage record for our great-great
grandfather, Nathan Carroll, Sr.  (One reference I have seen of him is as
Nathaniel B. Carroll, but it is unsubstantiated).  The marriage record for
Nathan Carrol and Mary A. Bonny is the just the handwritten recording of
their names in the marriage book (there's no certificate like today).
Nathan's will, 1868, though torn, does mention his leaving 40 acres to your
great grandfather, Moses Carrol.   What I assume is that Moses probably was
a younger son who wasn't old enough to move with his older brothers to
Missouri.  When his dad died, it would be reasonable that his dad would will
the land to his children still living in the area.

If you happened to miss this webpage, please view it.  It obtains
information about Nathan Sr. and a textual representation of the will.
 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourkin/carr002.htm.   Also, there's
an imporant link to Nathan Carrol's land record.

Now that I've made your acquaintance, I hope that we can stay in touch.  If
you have information, i.e. names, dates, etc. for Moses Carroll's
descendants, I'd be SO happy to receive that detailed information.  It isn't
necessary that I have documented proofs, but it does help to fill in the
gaps if I have names and dates, etc.   I'm just a family history researcher,
not a "genealogist".  I'm interested in my family history, but I'm not
writing a book or anything like that.....much too time consuming.  Next time
I'm in the Clark County, Indiana area again, I'll endeavor to look around
for information about your David and Ellen Carroll Jones.

If you would be willing to be listed as a family researcher in the CONTACTS
portion of my website (which would include your e-mail address),  I would
like to list you there; however, I would want your permission to do so.
This just helps me stay in touch with who you are and our relationship.
Some other Carroll researchers might see your name there and contact you.

 http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourkin/index.htm#Contacts is the
 link to the Contacts portion.

Well, I said I wasn't writing a book, so I'd better bring this to a quick
close.  May you and your family have a blessed holiday.

Jim:  Thank you so much for the Carroll information; I think you have
the relationships figured correctly.  I am not a "genealogist" either,
having just begun this summer, but I am totally fascinated by family
history, especially on my father's side, which previously was unknown to
me.  Feel free to list my name/email on your site in the CONTACTS
portion.  I would welcome the opportunity to meet other family members.
Here is a little more detail for your Carroll-Jones file: (some may be
duplication of what you already have.)

Ellen Carroll was born about 1854 in Kentucky.  At about age 20, she
married David Jones, who was born about 1851.  They lived in Clark
County in Henryville, IN, in 1880; David was listed in the census as a
farm laborer.  They produced several children:  Claudia May, b. abt.
 1875; Lillian (Lillie) B., b. abt 1878; Cora C., b. abt 1879; Samuel,
 birthdate unknown;  my father-Edward Albert, b. 5/10/1889, d. 9/30/1946.
There may also be other children; I'm still looking.

Sam married Bessie Davis, b. 6/18/1901, d. 1/1983:  their children
 were Carl D., b. 7/26/1908; William; Lillian, b. 10/14/1914; Mary; Dora;
& an infant who died.  He & his family lived in Bartholomew County, in
 Columbus, IN.

My father was born about the time of Ellen's death.  At the age of
28,  5/22/1918, my father Ed married Gertie Marie Starr in Bartholomew
county, just before leaving for service in WW I.  The marriage license
lists Ellen Carroll & David Jones as his parents.  He was very
kindhearted, & she needed a monthly income, which she could draw as his
spouse.  Also, they figured that if he were to be killed, she would
receive a widow's pension.  It wasn't totally platonic, however, since
they had a son who died in infancy.  Ed received an honorable discharge
in 1919.  He & Gertie divorced (date unknown). He married my mother,
Wilma Spencer, *birth date deleted*,  much later, when he was 53 years old,
10/14/1942 in Decatur County, Greensburg, IN.  His main employment was
as a farm worker.  He had contracted tuberculosis in Europe & received a
pension as a disabled veteran.  I was born (Sharon Ann) in *birth year deleted*, & he
died of the TB in 1946 in Jennings County, IN.  I was the only living
 child.  My mother never remarried.

I have a 25-year old son named David; however, I did not know my
grandfather's name when we chose that name, so it was coincidence.

 Jim,
Here is the remaining information I have on Ellen Carroll's husband,
 David Jones:
David was the son of Robert E. & Catherine ? (Jones,) both of whom
emigrated to America from Wales, possibly about 1842.   They appear in
the 1860 Clark County, IN census.  David's (b. abt 1851) siblings were
 William, b. abt. 1842; Mary, b. abt 1846; Robert, b. abt. 1846; Hugh, b.
 abt 1854; Henry F., b. abt 1857; and Owen, b. abt 1858. I have the names
 of young Robert's wife/children, as well as Henry's wife/children.  I am
still searching for information on the others.

Sharon -
You may have this information, but I just ran across your David and Ellen (Carroll) Jones in Clark County, ID in the 1880 census.
The record is online at www.familysearch.org ,  no charge to search... just put David Jones, Indiana, Clark County.  Does show that Ellen was born in KY and that David's father was born in Wales.   This is prior to the birth of your father.

Your cousin -
Jim Carroll

Thanks, Jim.  I had already seen that transcription.  (It was IN, though, not Idaho.)   My next goal is to find David's parents in Wales - I think they may have immigrated about 1842.
Have a very Happy New Year!

Hello, Ernest!
It's wonderful to hear from you!  I just discovered in 2002 that my grandmother was Ellen Carroll, & like you, I am a beginner in family history.  If my calculations are correct, we are third cousins, once removed.  I am descended from  Nathan Carroll, Sr., who was the father of Moses Carroll, who was Ellen Carroll's father.  Nathan  Junior  would have been Ellen's uncle.  Malinda E. Carroll is my grandaunt.
Thank you for the census information.  That is one year I do not have. Yes, the dates are often conflicting.  I was told that the original sheets had to be re-copied by hand multiple times for the states' & counties' records, which created a lot of transcription errors.  Sometimes the census enumerator just didn't have very good penmanship or the pages were smudged, resulting in bad copies.  Also, if people were not at home, the census taker sometimes may have relied on neighbors' estimates of ages/names, etc.
I have found the Carrolls in Clark County in the 1860, 1870, 1880, & 1910 Census - Nathan Sr. is 93 in 1870!  I have this information in detail if you need it.  I do feel Moses was either the oldest or one of the oldest children.  It appears that some of the children of Nathan Sr. did not leave Clark Co. until some time after his death in 1870. (He died one month after the census was taken.) Nathan Jr., Joseph M. & Moses are all in IN in May 1870.  By 1910, the only Carroll I have found so far in Clark County is Hugh Riley Carroll, son of  Joseph Martin Carroll.  Most of my ancestors were either born in, passed through, or settled in Clark County, so I spend a lot of time online researching Clark.  I had not thought to check Jefferson Co. - so thanks again for the information.  I am assuming this was Jefferson Co., KY, which is right across the river from Clark.  (Although, there is a Jefferson County, IN, just a few miles northeast.)  Please keep in touch.
