Message----- Hello!
My son-in-law is Konrad Carroll, son of Dennis Carroll, grandson of Clyde
Carroll. I am into genealogy and Konrad’s helping me with his
family info. I found your listing on RootsWeb over a year ago and am
just now having time to email you while Konrad is here visiting with my
daughter. I am hoping you still have this email address! Konrad
says that your name doesn’t sound familiar to him and so he doesn’t
know how you are related to his Carroll family. I figured the best
way to find out what to email you and ask! My name is Susan Nelson
and my husband and I live in Overland Park, KS, a suburb of Kansas City.
The
kids fly out on Monday to visit with Konrad’s parents for a week. I’m
hoping to have more information for him either before he leaves (that he
can show his parents) or by the time they return on the 16th.
We’re “puppy-sitting” for them while they travel. Konrad and
Karen live in Lubbock, TX. We’d
love to hear from you! Susan Nelson -----Original
Message----- Hi
James! THANK
YOU SO MUCH!!! What you have sent me is incredible and extremely
appreciated. J
I’m printing off everything you sent and will show Konrad this
afternoon. You are a real FIND for me! You have done a
wonderful job of documenting your information and as you know, that’s so
important. Konrad
and Karen (Nelson) Carroll told us on July 3rd that we are
going to be grandparents so we’re very excited! They were married
on June 12, 2004 and are both 26 years old. Both of the kids are
teachers/coaches at a high school in Lubbock which is almost 12 hours away
from our home in KC. My
grandmother spent a decade working on her family lines back in the mid
‘60s to mid ‘70s traveling across the US and writing all those many
letters. Oh how she would have loved computers and email. J
My father, an only child, wasn’t interested in it so the papers and
notebooks sat in their basement for many years. My husband, Dennis,
started helping his mother with some research and photo identification,
and started helping him. After about 6 months of that, he suggested
I ask my dad for my grandmother’s genealogy work. Well, that was
in July 2005, and the genealogy bug bit hard and I’ve been at it since
and see no end in sight (a much different perspective than when I first
started!). Now
that I have more Carroll information, I will talk to Emma Fae (Bull)
Carroll, Konrad’s grandmother, and ask her about old family
photos. She is living in Georgetown, a suburb of Austin, TX now,
along with Konrad’s sister & husband. Konrad’s parents,
Dennis and Marita, are retiring to this home about a year from now.
They taught in Perryton for many years, then moved to Henderson, NV to
teach for five more, and then will retire permanently next summer. Last
night Konrad said that Clyde’s sister, Pauline, passed away about two
months ago in Tulsa. He said they hadn’t really kept in touch with
Alma (as far as he knows). I
use Family Tree Maker for my genealogy software and am familiar with
GEDcoms, but I usually like to enter the information in my own style, so
what you have sent is perfect. I also quickly went to your web site
(different than the link on RootsWeb) and it is amazing! You have
done an absolutely wonderful job of sharing what you know and all the
photos. This is the type of web site we would like to create at some
point. We have not uploaded anything online yet as I am still
entering sources (although I have over 80 2” D-ring notebooks full of
the documents—my husband has about the same number, but I enter it
all). That’s a giant project that I need to focus on before
posting on the internet…but the research is so much more fun! J Living
in KC we are not far from Carroll Co., MO. The obvious question is
this…was the county named for the Carroll family? I’m sure they
have a county history book that could possibly provide this
information. We have a wonderful genealogy library in Independence,
MO (about 30 min. away). In fact, this library and the local
genealogy societies are hosting the NGS conference May 2007 in Kansas
City. The library hopes to have their new building completed and
have the grand opening during the conference. Thru
our research my husband and I have found we are very distant cousins more
than one time. Karen is sure that we’re going to discover that she
and Konrad are related somewhere along the line if we dig deep
enough. I, too, had a great great grandfather (Foster) that was
married to two sisters (Clark) in similar fashion so that must not have
been uncommon out in the ‘frontier.’ Once
again I want to THANK YOU for supplying the wonderful Carroll &
Rorabaugh information! It’s time I get everybody moving
about for lunch. I’ll take a couple of photos of the kids and get
them sent in the next couple of days. Susan -----Original
Message----- Hi Jim! Finally got the Virginia Carrolls book copy off in mail yesterday. Sent Priority Mail to make sure it gets to you…hopefully Saturday, but if not, shouldn’t be any later than Monday’s mail. Sorry for the delay. Hope you had a great time at the reunion! Was this your mom’s side or your Carroll side? If Carroll, did you take any photos that could be shared with Dennis Carroll in NV/TX? Take your time looking thru the book…there is a lot to review. “The family” appears on p. 160, but I have also put some arrows on a few other pages that looked interesting. Other parts may catch YOUR eye…I have only looked at a few sections but not deeply. I’m also curious if the author is someone that could be reached via snail mail or even possibly thru the publisher. Heritage Books was at the FGS Conference we attended at Ft. Wayne, and the gentleman is extremely knowledgeable, especially concerning military matters (his specialty). Let me know what you think! Thanks! Susan -----Original
Message----- Susan, sorry for the slight delay; had to replace my cable modem. The highlighted information is definitely our Carrolls; however, there’s a bit of a twist here that I need to investigate further. John Wiley Carroll is definitely the brother to Henry Hamilton Carroll, mine and Clyde’s grandfather. Nathan (Jr) and Susan Sullivan are their parents. What I’m struggling with here is the previous generation, i.e. Nathaniel B. Carroll and Mary Janette Graham. My database has Nathaniel B’s wife as Mary Bonny. Mary Graham may have been his first wife. What I’d love also to find is more information regarding the David Carroll in Goochland Co. I’d love to have a copy of your materials. I must run. We are having a family reunion in Perry, Oklahoma this weekend, i.e. my brothers and sisters and my mother, now 92. I’m making name tags for each one showing their lineage from Mom. There are going to be about 80 of us, so I have to get busy! Thanks SO much for writing. Jim

Message----- Hi Jim! This is Susan Nelson, mother-in-law to Konrad Carroll (son of Dennis & Marita, grandson of Clyde). While I was in Ft. Wayne, IN, attending the FGS conference, I spent a LOT of time in the Allen County Public Library. J While I was there, I came across a book that I wondered if you had seen before. It is Virginia Carrolls and Their Neighbors 1618-1800s by Elizabeth Carroll Foster, published by Heritage Books, Inc. in 1999. (ISBN 0-7884-1097-0; 1-800-398-7709; www.heritagebooks.com) I went to the index to look for the name Nathan (finding several listings), and on page 160 at the very top, I found: 1831 Oct. 31 – Nathan(iel) B. Carroll, son of David Carroll who resided in Goochland Co., md. [=married] in Mechlenberg Co., Mary Janette Graham; ch.: Nathan(iel) Jr. b. 1834 in IN md. Susan C. Sullivan; their son John Wiley Carroll b. 31 Aug 1863 in Henryville, IN md. Mathilda Carolyn Ryan 10 Aug 1885 in Crarollton, MO, d. 9 May 1947 at Ada, OK. (Carroll Cables, Apr. 1995) {See Goochland Co.} {Note: Query-Dorman, The VA Gen., v.25, no.1, 198, p. 74: Andrew Sterling Carroll, b. 1785?, Mecklenburg Co.? md. 2nd Ann Kelly; Susannah Carroll md. Obediah Kendrick, 1762? Culpeper Co.; all went TN via Union Co., SC} I typed this just as it appears (spelling & punctuation, etc.) in the book. I’m not exactly what all this means, but wondering if you have read this book. I made a copy of the WHOLE thing and would be HAPPY to send you a copy of it for you to have & decipher, if you are interested. I’m still digging backwards from this…only started reviewing it again last night. There are many references to name of David (variety of people), etc., but it has a TON of information from all over Virginia & surrounding areas. Before I write any more, I think I’ll wait to hear from you. Just thought I’d send this bit first. Off to lunch! Susan
