The Douglas County History Books says William Decatur Ballew was born in 1833. According to Clella Chance Byers, The 100 year History of Mansfield Book says he was born in 1836.

From a letter I received from Clella Chance Byers, Aug 19, 1985:This info is taken from a book, 100 Years Mansfield, Missouri - where he (Wm Ballew) died in Nov. 1911. Born in Tenn., 1836. Married at an early age . Fathered 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys. His wife died in 1879. He did serve as a soldier in the Confederate Army. After his wife's death he married a young girl in Roane County, Tenn.. Grandpa Ballew again fathered 10 children. He move in about 1882 to Mo., settled in Koshkonong, Mo., later moved to Mansfield, Mo.. Homesteaded 153 acres of land. His youngest son still owns part of that land, lives in Mansfield. Grandpa died in Nov. 1911. He was 72 when Ken was born. His second wife died in 1944. Grandpa Ballew may be buried at Prairie Hollow Cemetery, south of Mansfield or Mansfield Cemetery I believe it's Prairie Hollow.

Note: Koshkonong is in Oregon County, MO.

Also taken from the same letter:

Grandfathers children drifted west, mostly California. We went out there several years ago. My mothers youngest sister was still living, Aunt Hettie. The small town of Lindsay is full of my cousins and second cousins, I went to the cemetery which is fenced off and that part is graves of Ballews. So Grandpa started a population explosion. The Ballews were good people.

They settled on land at Bryant, Missouri. A patent for their homestead of 153 acres is dated April 16, 1893, and signed by President Grover Cleveland. Their major cash crop were timbers cut for the railroad. Jane and William had 10 children together, all of whom attended Hicks School, near Bryant. William lived for 78 years and 13 days. Birth Record for James Ernest Chance does not exist. The Douglas County corthouse burned in 1886. Apparently any birth/death records they had kept were destoyed and they did not record any other birth/death records afterward.

According to Pauline Chance, her mother-in-law, Ineth E. Conklin Chance (sister-in-law to James Ernest Chance), remembers "Ernie" working on the railroad (construction). He worked on the Mansfield to Ava railroad - not just a "water boy" but a job of some importance.

Clella Chance Byers told me "Ernie" worked for the MO Pacific Railroad.

Pauline Chance said of James Ernest Chance, "he was quite an electrician".

James Ernest Chance took his wife Alma Leora to Loveland, Colorado because she had been told by a doctor that she had Tuberculosis and should move to a dryer climate. Alma Leora died there 16 May 1922. After her death he is said to have remarried a woman there who was " an old meanie" and was not very good to his daughters. He left her and brought his daughters back to Wichita, Kansas and left them with their Grandma Booher. He got on a train headed for Missouri to look for work promising to return for the girls as soon as he was settled. No one ever heard from him again, He disappeared. His family believes he met with foul play because he would never have left his daughters and not come back for them. The last time anyone heard from him was in 1926. He told his brother George and sister-in-law Eleanor that his wife had threatened him. She said she would "get him". The family has wondered if she did. Clella told me that "Ernie" liked to gamble, she also wondered if he may have got into trouble over gambling. We may never know what happened to him.

From a letter written by Clella Chance Byers, 2 Aug 1985: " After our mother died "Ernie" wrote to Della once. Said when he got settled he would write. That was in 1926."

I searched for a marriage record for James Ernest Chance in Larimer County.

    None found.

George and Eleanor Chance (brother of James Ernest Chance) also lived in Loveland, Colorado.

She married WILLIAM FRANKLIN BYERS 14 April 1917 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., Kansas.

     Notes for CLELLA SAPHRONIA CHANCE:

Part of a letter written by Clella Chance Byers:

Tami, we grew up very poor in worldly goods. My father died young. Mother had small children. It was a struggle. She used to gather us around her and have prayer at night, asking God to let her live to raise us. Some way she managed. Ernie and Della worked for a small wage. They helped all they could. Fortunate Della and I had good husbands. We helped the others. When mother died and left the four little girls, half-sisters, we took them and cared for them until they could care for themselves. Mabel and Pearl were with Bill and I a lot.

As some wise man said there is a destany that makes us brothers. None goes his way alone. All we give to the lives of others comes back into our own.

    16. JERRY6 BREWER (GLADYS5 CHANCE, JAMES ERNEST "ERNIE"4, LAURA ALICE "ALLIE"3 BALLEW, WILLIAM DECATUR2, MARVEL1) died in Florida.

     Notes for JERRY BREWER:

Jerry Brewer lived in Kansas City at one time.

I've been told that Jerry had a fear of dying a violent death. He was very young when his mother died of Tuberculosis. His son died when he was less than 2 months old. His brother and sister both died tragic deaths. He was married to a woman (her first name may be Betty), they were lliving in Florida. Jerry drank alot and his wife became angry with him over his drinking and stabbed him several times while he was sleeping, killing him. She is in prison in Florida.

I suspect there is more to this story.
